How To Reduce Tension Throughout Your Body

by | Nov 10, 2021 | MOVING/RESTING

Tension in your body can lead to a slew of mental and physical ailments that affect your life. This is a guide on how to reduce tension throughout your body.

If you notice a higher level of stress in your life and tightness in your body, you might be suffering from pain caused by that tension. Tension is tough to identify at times because its symptoms mimic those of other ailments. However, by relieving tension, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel in your everyday life. With that in mind, here are a few ways for how to reduce tension throughout your body.

Manage Your Nutrition

One method for reducing tension in the body that people generally overlook is what you eat–and also when you eat. Stress is one of the most significant contributors to tension in the body, and unfortunately most of us manage stress in unproductive ways by eating too much and too often—which not only ends up making us feel worse, but also depletes our bodies of important nutrition that our bodies need to manage the experience of stress in our body. Stress can increase when your body pumps out too much cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that your body naturally produces to regulate metabolism, suppress an overactive immune system, and increase blood sugar. However, too much cortisol can lead to chronic stress, which negatively affects your body. When you are experiencing tension, turn to nutrient dense foods and nutritious beverages that you know will support your body and are not pumped with synthetic chemicals and artificial flavors. Also consider a regimented eating window and practice intermittent fasting or time restricted eating during the rest of the day. Fasting gives your body the break it needs from digestion and allows your body the time it needs to function with more ease.

Watch Your Posture

If you work in front of a computer every day, chances are that you often sit in a hunched-over position so that you can focus on the screen. This is not a healthy posture, as it causes tension in your neck and spine. Instead, try sitting with your back straight up, lowering your shoulders, and leaning them back to improve your posture. Take a few deep breaths to relax your body so that you can maintain a comfortable position. Improving your posture throughout the day will work wonders for long-term tension reduction in your body.

Stretch Regularly

Stretching your body is essential even if you aren’t a superstar athlete. The everyday stresses of life create physical tension in our muscles, which is why you need to get up a few times per day to stretch. This is especially true before and after a workout, when tension in your muscles is at its highest.

Practicing yoga is another fantastic method for stretching out your muscles. No matter how you decide to do it, stretching regularly ensures your muscles don’t succumb to tension.

Get a Massage

If you feel tension in hard-to-reach parts of your body such as your back, you may want to get a massage from a licensed professional. Massage therapists receive training that encompasses all aspects of the profession, and they can tailor each individual massage to the client’s preferences. They can also perform a deep-tissue massage that easily locates the stress points throughout your body and instantly reduces tension.

Overall, tension can cause major headaches, but you don’t have to let it control your life. Now that you know how to reduce tension throughout your body, you can go back to living the life you love.
